Australian Apple iBookstore launched today

Bookseller+Publisher reports that the local iBookstore has today launched the sale of Australian ebooks.

Publishers include Hachette Australia (finally!), HarperCollins and Pan Macmillan. (Penguin and Random House seem to be missing from the list.) Hachette Australia has indicated that they will release ebooks simultaneously for new releases. Here’s a sample of some titles and prices (categories in brackets as per iBookstore):

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens (Fiction & Literature) — Free
Where Angels Fear To Tread and Other Stories of the Sea by Morgan Robertson (Classics) — $1.99
Hell Island by Matthew Reilly (Fiction & Literature) — $5.99 (#1 in the top paid books list)
Untouched by Anna Campbell (Romance) — $9.99
Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh (Fiction & Literature) — $12.99 (Visions of Heat is also listed, but categorised as Paranormal)
Night’s Cold Kiss by Tracey O’Hara (Fantasy) — $15.99
The Reckless Bride by Stephanie Laurens (Romance) — $20.99
Hey, You In the Black T-Shirt by Michael Chugg (Biography) — $22.99 (#3 in the top paid books list!)
Lazarus Rising by John Howard (Biography) — $32.99
Confessional by Jack Higgins (Crime & Thriller) — $37.99
The Captains by Malcolm Knox (Sports & Recreation) — $39.99

Seriously?!? $39.99?!? Plants vs Zombies—a game that has provided me with days if not weeks of entertainment—was less than $15 and it was months before I succumbed to buying it.

Alas, Bronwyn Parry, Erica Hayes and Kandy Shepherd are not listed, and nor are the Mills & Boon authors, as far as I can tell.

Have you checked out the iBookstore offerings? Has anything caught your fancy?

  1. Erica Hayes says:

?? on M&B. Not sure if they have an agreement with iBooks in the US or not.
Tracey O’Hara (HarperCollins) sells for AUD$13.64 at Borders and A&R. Pricing is weird.
As for my e-books, they’re still US-only at this stage, so Pan Mac Aust have no say in it. Not sure if they’re in the US iBookstore, because I can’t see it :)

  2. Thanks for being interested enough to look for my books, Kat! I’ve heard from the publisher that As Darkness Falls should be available at the iBookstore within a few days, and Dark Country soon.
