The White Queen by Philippa GregoryRead on for a chance to win a copy of The White Queen. The contest ends midnight on Wednesday, August 26 AEST, and it’s open to anyone, including readers overseas.

It’s time for another non-romance freebie, and this time it’s the latest release from bestselling author Philippa Gregory, who wrote The Other Boleyn Girl.

What the book is about

Here’s the description of the book sent to me by Gregory’s publicist:

The White Queen is the first book in a new series set amid the deadly feuds of England known as the Wars of the Roses.

Brother turns on brother to win the ultimate prize—the throne of England—in this dazzling account of the wars of the Plantagenets. They are the claimants and kings who ruled England before the Tudors, and now Philippa Gregory brings them to life through the dramatic and intimate stories of the secret players: the indomitable women, starting with Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen.

The White Queen tells the story of a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition who, catching the eye of the newly crowned boy king, marries him in secret and ascends to royalty. While Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for the success of her family, her two sons become central figures in a mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the missing princes in the Tower of London, whose fate is still unknown. From her uniquely qualified perspective, Philippa Gregory explores this most famous unsolved mystery of English history, informed by impeccable research and framed by her inimitable storytelling skills.

With The White Queen, Philippa Gregory brings the artistry and intellect of a master writer and storyteller to a new era in history and begins what is sure to be another bestselling classic series from this beloved author.

THE TAKING by Erin McCarthy with  Zachary Quinto as the voodoo priest Felix Leblanc.  Zachary Quinto  has the dark, inner demon energy that would make this character creep menacingly & sensuously across the screen.

The White Queen: The cover model looks like Natalie Portman, but she was in the last movie, so bad idea.  Winona Ryder could do it, but she might be too old (eeek!) if the actress has to play the young Elizabeth.

  3. Rachael McDiarmid

Real life lovers – Keira Knightly and Rupert Friend.  Just need to check the height of Rupert as Edward IV was apparently quite tall.  Then again, movie magic – I’m sure they can make him look taller!

I can’t stop thinking about this!  I’ve had flashes of casting options for two days, Kat!  My favorite Philippa Gregory was The Queen’s Fool, and I’d love to see that done as a film.  In the title role, maybe…Emma Watson?

    Hi :)
    What a great blog post.
I think Scarlett Johanson would be the best person for the role.
Once you picture her no others fit as well.
    All the best,

    Shelly Laurenston’s Dragon Actually
    Annwyl the Bloody
    Eliza Dushku?
    Fearghus
Not completely up on recent stars, but maybe Gerard Butler?

Whoops forgot the why, brain not working this evening.
Eliza, because Anywl needs to be physical and full of snark, kinda like Eliza’s Buffy character.
Gerard Butler,  this was a hard one cos I do not know many current actors, never seen him in a movie, but in some interviews I have seen of him online, it looks like he could do the arrogance and humour and he is not too short.

Congrats Kat – I think you deserve a Zombie Chicken Award http://torchundertheblanketbooks.com/2009/08/21/the-zombie-chicken-award/

  9. Nikki

“The Constant Princess” and, yep, would have to say Scarlett (Johannson) as Katherine, the desperately loving princess ripped from her spanish life who ends up with the wrong brother but spends her life fulfilling a promise to her true love.

She’s got the brow, the skin, the cleavage, the tiny waist, the lips and the eyes. Not too many modern actors who’d do well if sucked into a vortex and spat out in Tudor England, but SJ is one of them. She’d be a star there, too.

She’d also excel at the decades long endurance and tragic end. No-one does poignant quite like her.

I think Hilary Duff would be great because I believe she has just the right facial features to transform into The White Queen.  Also, she’s a very good actress.
