Sony Reader update – It’s here!

Sony Reader PRS-650 (Red)If, like me, you’ve been waiting with bated breath for news that the Sony Reader has landed on our shores, wait no more—it’s here!

This afternoon I got a call from Sony World Square confirming that they’ve received some stock. They have the PRS-650 in black or red and the PRS-350 in silver. And if you click on those links you’ll notice that the purchase links are now working on the Sony website. If you buy online, shipping is free until December 31st. According to other readers on Twitter, Melbourne stores expect stock early next week.

Unfortunately, I was nowhere near the Sony store when they rang, so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to check it out in person. I’m planning to bring a Kindle owner with me to provide a comparison.

The PRS-650 (6″) retails for $299 and the PRS-350 (5″) retails for $229.

Sony survey

Over at Book Bee, Jason is collating reader opinions on ebooks. The answers will be collated and presented to Sony Australia in time for their industry forum in next week. So here’s a chance to let them know what YOU think about pricing, DRM and other important issues relating to ebooks. Click here for the survey.

We’d love to know if you’ve spotted the Reader in your area. And if you’ve bought one of these little babies, let us know what you think!

Oh, how exciting. My main reason for not having bought one has now been removed (i.e. wanting to see these ones before I make my decision).

Will be interested to hear what you and the Kindle owner think in terms of comparisons.

Unfortunately, I have to wait until next week due to an ill-timed cold. I just hope they don’t sell out. Everyone on Twitter seems to want a red one, too!

  3. HUBBY ordered mine for me today.  I’m so very excited.  Although I am concerned that all the books currently sitting in my TBR are definitely not going to get read once I go digital. ;)
Lucky it’s going to take “up to 10 days” to get here so that should be plenty of time to get that pile down… argh!
    (I got a red one…)
