@SonomaLass Despite the drama, I would read the next book if there was a sequel, as I rather enjoyed the secondary characters and the world building. Do you know if she's making any more?

I couldn't put this book down. Yes, it was gothic, but I knew that going in, so I was expecting it, and I loved how it worked. I thought Hieber did a wonderful job using supernatural elements to justify the gothic, melodramatic excesses of the story.
I also found the teacher-student element a bit squicky, but then so did Alexi. I actually thought that aspect was pretty believable -- I know several happy couples who met as student and professor, and it is awkward and complicated when you have that mutual attraction. I liked how it provided some internal conflict, rather than having only external conflict against the big supernatural evil.

I agree with your review. Worldbuilding was good, but some of characters were too overdramatic - particularly weeping willow Percy, who needs to be dragged kicking and screaming to participate in the plot.
