This week’s podcast episode is a tad late, but it’s definitely worth the wait. I met Alex Adsett some years ago at a book-related convention, a little bit before she started her own literary agency. Since then, she has been a familiar face at RWA and GenreCon, so when we had some free time in Adelaide a couple of months ago, we snuck into an empty room and recorded a podcast. We had no idea what we would talk about before we started recording, but there is so much to ask about publishing that we really didn’t run out of things to say!
One of the most interesting topics we cover is the potential impact of changes to the parallel import restrictions on romance authors. It’s a prominent topic within Australian publishing at the moment, but because many romance authors have such a large overseas market, the impact of PIR to them is quite different. Alexa and I also touch on the role of the agent, how the Australian romance writing community is different to other literary communities in Australia, and the impact of shops like K-mart and Target on the way books are made. We also talk briefly about new adult fiction — what exactly does ‘new adult’ mean?
