In the previous podcast episode, we talked about some of the initiatives being explored by the #romanceclass community in the Philippines. Now we get to meet two authors who are part of that community. When I set up the interview appointments, there were online rumblings around the need for more heroines with a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) background, so I was delighted to be able to talk to two authors who come from the STEM field and could speak about their experiences.
Suzette, Six and I talk about their secret identities as romance author, writing characters who are into science, the influence of US mainstream romance on their work, and what kinds of stories they’d like to see more of. Towards the end of the podcast, we talk about how authentic Filipino young adult novels would differ from US YA, and I wish we’d had more time to explore this topic! It will be interesting to read the novels from this batch of #romanceclass authors as they become parents of teens.
I have to apologise to Suzette for getting her name wrong in the intro. I don’t think we’ve had one episode where I haven’t flubbed some simple piece of narration, so clearly, I need to up my podcast hosting game!
Thanks to @diemng13, @jen_hallock, and @Kaetrin67 for all their lovely comments on Twitter! And massive thanks to Rudi, who is convinced that all my audio from the Philippines is cursed because strange things keep happening to our files.
