BT047. Jay E. Tria, Six de los Reyes and Mina V. Esguerra: #romanceclassFLAIR

Guests: Jay E. Tria, Six de los Reyes and Mina V. Esguerra | Host: Kat Mayo | Audio producer: Rudi Bremer | Recorded: 19/08/2017 Manila

It all started on Twitter. I think I semi-jokingly suggested that we need romance imprints for indie books, so that readers can find books with a similar reader promise. Author Mina V. Esguerra responded, and within a few months our discussion evolved into a #romanceclass writing workshop that aimed to produce books that could be loosely grouped into an imprint that we decided to call Flair. To do this, Mina challenged the workshop participants to write steamier romance, to use familiar tropes with a Filipino flavour, and to use alternating points of view between the romantic couple.

So what is Flair? Flair is not a publisher, but we’re a team that works with authors to prepare their books for publication. This includes manuscript development, editing, cover design, and promotion when the book is launched. The team is made up of #romanceclass community authors, readers, editors and designers. We select the manuscripts we think best reflect Flair’s goals, and we work extensively with authors on the editing process. Hopefully, this is obvious in the final product, yet transparent to the reader.

The process wasn’t quite as easy as we expected, but the team we have gathered to support Flair has been a joy to work with. I hope you give our launch title a try, and watch this space for more new titles!

Finally, now that you’ve had a chance to hear readings from some of my favourite romances, I’d love to hear your favourite romantic scenes. I’m challenging you, our listeners, to record yourself doing a dramatic reading from your favourite books and authors. Post your video or audio on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook — tag us, so we can find it! — or email the audio file to podcast@bookthingo.com.au. Please include the title and author — we would love to include as many of your readings as we can in a future podcast!

At 31, Kris’s dating life is starting to resemble a reality show. So when she strikes up a conversation with a nerdy but gorgeous stranger on the train, getting serious is the last thing on her mind. Been there, done that, and she has the emotional baggage to prove it.

At 24, Ringo knows what he wants — and when a train flirtation turns into a night he can’t forget, he knows he wants Kris. But it’s clear she has other plans, and they don’t include him. So when they find themselves on the same flight to Seoul, it’s Ringo’s chance to turn up the heat, and convince Kris to take a risk.

In a new city, with someone new — the right someone — what could change? Maybe nothing. But also, maybe everything.
