When I heard that the 2018 IASPR conference was going to be in Sydney, and the theme would focus on location, one of the first people I messaged was Jennifer Hallock. She writes the Sugar Sun series, set in the Philippines when it was a colony of the USA. She gave an amazing presentation at IASPR on the ways in which historical romance books are “selectively accurate”. You can find her paper on her blog, which I’ve linked to below. I had some amazing conversations with Jen and #romanceclass author Mina V. Esguerra while they were in Sydney, and they’ve made me think a lot about the way I read, the way I select books, and how I’ve made room (or not) for diverse voices in my reading process. I hope you find this interview as fascinating as I did.

Jen is crowdsourcing a couple of Goodreads lists around diverse historical romance: Historical romance with unusual settings and Historical romance with political, economic, and/or social conflict. Feel free to contribute titles to these lists!

Had to chase after @jen_hallock to get this one photo proving that we met each other! She and @minavesguerra have been my daily buddies for the past week, and it has been a constant exchange of ideas with occasional moments of gluttony. ? If you haven’t read Jen’s Sugar Sun series, I recommend it. We also recorded a podcast, and I can’t wait to share it with you!
